Time
We are creatures of habit. We eat when we think we need to eat -- in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. When these times arrive, we pursue food.
Sight
Call it the mouth-watering syndrome -- when we see foods that tempt our taste buds, we eat.
Smell
Smell, like sight, triggers the appetite. Scent induces insulin secretion which makes us think we're hungry
Variety
After a meal, we want what we haven't had, like dessert. We like the whole gamut of food groups. No bread at dinner? Then we seek it out later.
Temperature
The colder we feel, the more we eat. That's why restaurants often keep thermostats set low.
Refined Carbs
After a meal heavy in refined carbohydrates, we can crave more food in a matter of hours. These carbs cause a drop in blood sugar, resulting in a desire to eat.
Alcohol
There may not be a scientific link between alcohol and appetite but the more impaired our judgment, the more we consume.
